The Lessons Learned Group
What we Are

The Lessons Learned Group (LLG) is a small group of professionals and
practitioners in adventure activities, brought together by a common aim to:
- Incorporate into ongoing
good practice any lessons that can be learned from outdoor accidents.
- The Group's intention is to
present an objective summary of an incident together with possible
lessons. We do not aim to allocate blame or responsibility and our report
represents the views of the individual members of LLG and not of any
official body.
- Information not currently
available to us may render our comments inaccurate and the lessons
identified may or may not have influenced the actual outcome. Any report
published has been agreed by at least four individuals within the Group as
meeting these aims.

Who we Are
LLG came together after initial discussions involving the following:
- Clive Atkins - London-based
freelance local authority Outdoor Education Adviser, Consultant and
Inspector
- Marcus Bailie - formerly
Plas y Brenin and Tiglin. Now Head of Inspection, AALA
- Bob Barton - formerly
Glenmore Lodge and Principal, Outward Bound Eskdale. Now Outward Bound
Trust Safety Adviser
- John Cousins - Director of
Training, Plas y Brenin, formerly MLTUK
- Nick Gair - former head of
operations for the Duke of Edinburgh's Award
- Alan Williams - Head of
Plas Menai
Membership of the group may be expanded in future but the intention is to
stay small enough to achieve effective internal communication.
Members all agree that there is a need for the identification and
dissemination of "Lessons Learned" and that existing routes of
information flow were limited in their success. The Group aims to support the
case for continuing adventure, and for informed risk management rather than
elimination of all risks.
